Burwash Walking Football – an update:

In December the Burwash Walking Footballers took on Heathfield & Uckfield for our final fixture of 2018

To be honest, although I have been asked to write a report I can’t remember what the final score was or much about the game – don’t get old!  I know that we were all immaculately turned out in matching sky-blue shirts, black shorts and stockings (no giggling down there at the front please).  All we need now is a ‘front-of shirt’ sponsor and we will be well away.

We lost and that’s about it, I think we went down by three goals, something like 8-11 in a high scoring game.  We all enjoyed the curry afterwards.

We pitched-up at the The Bear for our Christmas Social and their Christmas Quiz and didn’t finish bottom so that was a bit of a result.

The New Year dawned and although we continue to train hard every Tuesday evening, we do make time for other things.  Mid January eight of us went to Fenton’s Curling Rink at Frant for a two hour session on the ice.

We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and it turned into a tense match between our two sides with it going to the wire on the last end before Lindsay Green ‘curled’ in a brilliant stone on his final effort to win it for his side.

I was hoping to have a couple of photo’s but everyone’s ‘phones had mysteriously seized-up in the cold.  So they don’t have mobiles in Scandinavia then….?

Talking of Lindsay I would like to mention that he was awarded the accolade of “Manager’s most improved footballer of the year - 2018’  There was no cup or cash prize just extra quodos – I hate him!

Next up is Archery.  The usual bunch of mis-fits and mis-creants (and ‘miss what ever her name is’ – that’s a line from a song.  £5 to the first person who names the band and the song-title) will be dressing in green and wearing hose (I’ve warned you already…) for a day out at Buxted Park.

We hope to arrange this in the spring when the weather is a bit better as standing there trying to balance  an apple on your head when you are shivering is not easy.

We are making preliminary steps to enter an over 60’s  walking football tournament in June this year in Eastbourne.  Not much in the way of detail yet as the organisers are unsure of how many teams may enter but it’s not a knock-out tournament so we should have several games against different teams of differing abilities.  Our sole aim will be to not finish bottom.

All in all, a pretty successful year for the group both on and off the field.

If you fancy the football (and the social side) why not give us a go?  Only criteria is that you need to be over 50.  Can’t play football? – no problem, neither can we.  No kit? – no problem we can supply it.  No balls? We’ve got plenty!
